1. How do I spend my time in role?
Activity
The purpose of this activity is to give you some insight into how you spend your time in a typical working week. At the end of this activity you should have a better idea of time spent directly or indirectly adding value to patient care.
Task 1:
Capture your main activities during the week in your learning journal, in a way that makes sense to you. Some people like to theme their activities (meetings/admin/patient contact/staff contact etc) and note time spent, others would use a time log (template on next page) or an adaptation of this to meet their needs. Use a format that works best for you. Once completed, analyse your results and think about how this does or does not mirror your job description or the priorities captured in your objectives. If you are spending time on activities that are not adding value to patient care, you may wish to ask yourself why you are doing these activities? Could things be done differently?
Task 2:
Share your findings with your line manager and/or work-based mentor and explore how you may shift the balance of your time towards adding value to patient care. You will return to this later in Module 6 so ensure your analysis is clear enough to make sense when you revisit it.
